Cam-and-groove (camlock) couplings are the universal language of fluid transfer in tote operations. The naming system — types A through F plus DC and DP — is confusing the first time you encounter it. Here’s a memorable working guide.
The mnemonic
Each coupling has a male end and a female end. The female (with the cam levers) is called a “coupler” or “groove”; the male (the plug end) is called an “adapter” or “arm.” The letter naming tells you what each end is and what threads it interfaces with.
Type A: male adapter with female threads
Male camlock end on one side, female threaded port on the other. Threads into a male pipe (like the discharge of a tote bottom valve, if that valve has a male thread). Less common in tote work.
Type B: female coupler with female threads
The female camlock side, with a female threaded port behind it. Mates to a Type E or Type F male adapter. Goes onto a male pipe nipple.
Type C: female coupler with hose tail
The most common “hose end” type. Female camlock side connecting to a hose tail (barb) for fluid hose attachment. This is what you put on the end of your dispense hose.
Type D: female coupler with male threads
Female camlock on the cam side, male threads on the back. Threads into a female pipe port.
Type E: male adapter with hose tail
Male camlock with hose barb behind. Goes on the end of a hose to mate with a Type B, C, or DC female coupler.
Type F: male adapter with male threads
Male camlock with male threads behind. Threads into a female pipe port. Common as a dispense-side adapter on a tote.
Type DC: dust cap
Female camlock on one side, closed on the back. Used to cap a male adapter when not in use. Keeps debris out of the dispense path.
Type DP: dust plug
Male camlock on one side, closed on the back. Used to plug a female coupler when not in use.
The common stack
Most tote operations end up running this combination: Type F (threaded into the tote’s 2″ outlet) mates with Type C (hose end). Pop the cam levers, hose disconnects. Pop the cam levers on a Type DC (dust cap), and the tote outlet is closed off. Total parts count: 3 per tote.
Materials
Poly cam-and-groove is fine for water, mild aqueous chemistries, and dilute acids/bases. Aluminum is fine for water and most petroleum but corrodes in aqueous service. Stainless 316 is the safe universal choice and what we spec for any aggressive chemistry. Brass is uncommon and not recommended for food contact.
